Brand Spotlight: Dr Martens Header

Dr Martens is one of our biggest brands here at Cloggs. With a product range that transcends trends and generations too, we’re honoured to represent their brand on our website, and simply love receiving pictures from our customers wearing their iconic Docs! This brand spotlight post is designed to tell you everything you need to know about much-loved brand Dr Martens, and highlight some of their most versatile and valued footwear styles.

Brand History

Arguably one of the most famous footwear brands in the world, Dr Martens has achieved a cult-like status with their incredible range of boots since their conception in 1960. Their iconic 1460 boot (which was named after the date the first boot came out of the Dr Martens Northampton factory, April 1st, 1960), was originally designed for a practical purpose, but has since become one of the most renowned styles in the fashion industry!

Starting from humble and memorable beginnings, the original Dr Marten boot was created by Klaus Märtens, a doctor for the German army in WWII who required some structured boots to support a sprained ankle. Noticing his standard issue army boots weren’t quite cutting the mustard, he sought to create an alternative option which resembled the military boots of the time, yet with a more soft and supple leather to provide additional comfort. He also designed the AirWair rubber soles we’ve come to associate with the Dr Martens brand - a unique concept for the era.

Märtens adapted the traditional rubber sole which was solid, to utilise internal air pockets that would soften and buffer the foot from any impact, whilst simultaneously ensuring the durability of the sole remained intact.

The brand has gone from strength to strength since, cementing its place as one of Britain’s most iconic brands of footwear. It became the staple uniform of the Mods thanks to Pete Townshend of the Who being a huge fan of the 1460 style, which we’ll cover at length in the style section.

Now with an extensive range spanning a wide variety of styles, Dr Martens is a fashion staple that is surely here to stay. Let’s take a look at some of their most iconic styles, all of which are available from Cloggs.
