Blog/Brand Bible/Introducing Polo by Ralph Lauren
What started as a humble necktie store has transformed into a global fashion icon in just over 40 years. Despite the fluctuations in taste and culture over the last half century Ralph Lauren have remained at the forefront of fashion.
Here at Cloggs we have worked tirelessly to put together an unbeatable portfolio of top brands designed to cater for our dedicated customers’ every need, and our Polo Ralph Lauren collection fits right in.
Few brands can boast the same prestige and cultural cachet as Ralph Lauren, but it’s impossible to tell the story of the brand without telling the story of the man behind it. Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz) made his first forays into the fashion world in the mid-1960s after serving in the Army, working as a sales assistant while fostering dreams of becoming a designer. When his attempt to introduce a European-inspired tie at the company he worked for was spurned, he decided to venture out by himself, forming Polo Ralph Lauren in 1967.
Over the next few years the demand for Polo neck-ties grew massively and Polo Ralph Lauren expanded into a menswear collection. 1970 proved a massive year for Ralph Lauren as he won a COTY award for menswear innovation. Following this success, Polo Ralph Lauren released their first women’s line in 1971, which proved to be an iconic range of clothing as the Polo Player emblem was introduced to the world. Since the creation of the logo it has been a nearly-ubiquitous addition to every design and product produced in the range. The heritage and classic styling of the label has remained constant for over more than four decades as Polo Ralph Lauren has become one of the world’s best-loved and best-known fashion houses. 1972 was another huge year for Polo Ralph Lauren as they released their first range of polo shirts in over 24 colours. Since then, the Ralph Lauren polo shirt has become a lasting icon of the preppy culture and lifestyle.
The success of the early 1970s continued throughout the decade which created the foundations of a global fashion icon. Ralph Lauren continued to release new fashion lines including Polo Boys, Polo Girls and a Western inspired line in 1978. Ralph Lauren also released a range of fragrances and became the first designer to release fragrance lines for both sexes at the same time. Ralph Lauren’s dominance continued into the 1980s and 1990’s as the fashion ‘superbrand’ released many more styles; such as the Polo Sport, Lauren Ralph Lauren and Ralph Lauren Purple.
Today, Ralph Lauren sit at the very top of the fashion industry, producing everything from formal menswear to kids footwear.
