How to style Denim

Denim as a trend is a pretty large one to cover - because it’s spanned so many different eras it’s wriggled its way into every possible nook and cranny of fashion. You’ll find denim everywhere, so before we begin our style guide we need to establish some basic denim groundwork.

What different fits are there?
Women's denim guide

This picture sums up the different kind of jean fits available for women. Unfortunately, because denim is such a trend-setter, there are always more exciting and innovative jean designs hitting the market. Most recently, we’ve seen the ‘boyfriend jeans’ - a baggy, casual jean style with rolled up ankles, and the ‘mom jeans’ - a high-waisted jean, again with rolled up ankles, taking centre stage in the high street shops. We’ve also generally got a ‘high-waisted jeans’ style which is flattering and chic, and we’ve seen ‘flared jeans’ making a big comeback - jeans which flare out at the bottom and cover the shoes.

Men's denim guide

Similarly, with the men’s denim guide this highlights plenty of different jean styles. Mens jeans tend to stay more classic, with the fits you see above staying fairly standardised - though we definitely see a couple of new styles trickling through here and there. More recently we’ve seen ‘skinny jeans’ - a super tight fitting jean which is tight around the ankle, and ‘carrot fit jeans’ - jeans with a dropped crotch which again fit at the ankle, creating a baggy and casual finish.

We used Polyvore to create this image.

In 2014 we saw the denim trend giving a nod to the earlier eras. Flares were back in in a big way, as well as dungarees. Catwalks all over the world were giving fashion lovers a pang of nostalgia as it was revealed that some vintage pieces from the back of your wardrobe were now in fashion again. We saw many designer and high street brands latch on to this, and so the ‘skinny jean’ fell by the wayside. Another way in which the denim trend evolved is a move towards denim accessories. Denim footwear, denim bags and even denim jewellery were all big in the style stakes - which, as you can imagine, we were pretty darn excited about.

We’ve chosen our 3 hottest female denim shoes for both males and females and put them together in this Polyvore collage. Like what you see? Let’s take a closer look.

Denim shoes allow you to stick to the denim trend in a subtle way, without going all out. We think denim is the perfect material to rock a smart/casual vibe, and the right denim pieces can take you from work, to the pub, to a meal and even to the club - if you know how to style them.

One of the biggest fashion questions of the past few years is double denim: yay or nay? The answer, we think, is most definitely a yay - and if you’re feeling bold and brave why not go all the way with triple denim? We’ve got the shoes covered for now, but what are the staple denim items you need in your wardrobe? Let’s take a look.

1. Denim Shirt

Classic for both men and women. Denim shirts come in a variety of different colours, styles and denim washes. For men, we like a more fitted shirt in a classic dark denim, like the one pictured above. For the ladies? Why not try a lighter shade. A looser fitted shirt will allow you to rock it with jeans done up in a smart fashion, open over a cool printed tee, tucked in to a cute skater skirt or belted with leggings. A denim shirt is versatile for both men and women, which is exactly why it’s such a wardrobe staple.

2. Denim Jacket

Denim jackets are a fashion staple that we just can’t seem to get rid of. They’re in and out of fashion so regularly it’s almost impossible to keep up - but their cool, comfortable and easy-to-style nature means you’d be a fool not to have one. You can dress them up or down, and donning one of these gives you instant model-chic, what’s not to love? We particularly like the fur collar on this little Brookhaven number, but guys and gals - it’s nigh-on impossible to get the denim jacket trend wrong. If it fits and it’s denim then you’re good to go!

2. Denim Shorts

We’re heading towards the Spring/Summer season now and the weather is perking up - which means it’s nearly time for us to dust those shorts off and get the pins out! Denim shorts are an easy and comfortable way to stay on trend in the heat. They come in all shapes and sizes. For men, we like a classic knee-length short - like the ones pictured above. For the women, however - there’s scope to be a lot more creative! Denim shorts for women come in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes - we particularly recommend combining two trends in one by shopping denim shorts with fringing for a little extra pizazz.

4. Jeans

As you’ll know by now, jeans come in a variety of different colours, shapes, sizes and styles - so it’s fairly difficult for us to recommend. Every shop will have a slightly different fit for their size, but what we can recommend is to shop for your body shape. There are styles of jeans to flatter every shape and size - make sure you buy a pair that fit you like a glove and make you feel fabulous. Whether that’s super skinny black or acid-wash flares, there’s a pair of jeans with everyone’s name on them, just make sure you team them with some awesome shoes to complete your look.
