Blog/How To Style/Hello Retro: Stylish Shoes Through the Ages
Style and fashion trends and fads change as often as the weather. A particular style will become fashionable, and every brand will snap up the look and include it into their repertoire, only for it to be cast aside the following season. As we embrace the new trends and hype products and ever-evolving fashion looks, it’s difficult to remember some of the classic styles we’d fallen in love with the season before.
Of course, there are some signature styles which never go out of fashion and are truly timeless. We’ve decided to throw it back to some of our favourite retro footwear, decade by decade. These are pieces which truly represent a decade long gone, but their style credentials will continue to live on for years to come. So let’s get started!
Style in the fifties was all about being smart - for the women it was about waist cinching dresses, A-line silhouettes and peep toe heels. For the men about town it was all about suits, pleated trousers and brogues - a timeless style of shoe that is still as popular today as it was back then!
The sixties was such an iconic decade for so many reasons - with style being a significant one. From hairstyles such as the beehive and Vidal Sassoon’s pixie crop, to mini skirts and PVC. Colour took central stage in this decade, along with cue pop art patterns which were worn by almost everyone!
2015 is definitely the Seventies comeback year - it’s everywhere! Flares, platform heels, retro trainers and fringing is the only thing people are wearing this summer, so make sure you get your hands on some Seventies inspired footwear that will send you straight back to Woodstock!
Some would say that the eighties is a decade full of fashion faux pas and one they would much rather forget - but not everything to come out of the eighties is bad! Forget bumbags, shell suits and spandex and remember some of the better things like Sperry Topsider boat shoes and iconic pointed heels!
The nineties was the era of loose fitting clothes and colour - unless you were attempting to channel the grunge look, and in that case colour was your enemy! Jelly shoes and Dr Martens are both iconic styles from this era and are still going strong today - especially since the recent 90’s trend revival!
We’re sure you’ll agree that these styles are all as stylish today as they ever way, but they pay true homage to an era since past. Any of these shoes will help you take a trip down memory lane - and any trip is improved with good shoes, so make sure you pick some up today!
