John Boyd Dunlop is remembered for inventing the first commercially viable pneumatic tyre. On realising the usefulness and improved ride that pneumatic tyres allowed over conventional solid rubber tyre of the period, he patented the idea. This discovery of how to bond canvas to rubber became instrumental in developing the earliest sports shoes in the 1830s by his Liverpool Rubber Company.
