EMU Boots were originally conceived by Australian surfers in the south in a town called Geelong, Victoria in the 70’s. This was a thriving region for Australian wool production, due to the high quality of merino sheepskin. EMU Boots came about as the surfers decided that on cold mornings they needed something to warm their feet up. So they approached a tannery in Geelong taking scrap pieces of sheepskin and roughly wrapping them around their feet, EMU Boots were born. This boot was deemed by many, as being ‘ugly’, so the name UGG boots were given to them. From then on UGG boots were produced from this region of Australia and have become a huge fashion and comfort statement globally.
1994 saw EMU Boots approach the tannery in Geelong to formulate a strategy to produce UGG boots of a higher standard. The name EMU Boots is due to the Australian national bird. An Emu is a forward, fast moving bird which is agile and powerful; all the qualities which the EMU Boots brand possess.
Today EMU Boots still stay true to their mission statement of being truly Australian. This is a key factor which differentiates EMU Boots from other UGG Boots. For a long time EMU Australia Boots were completely manufactured in Australia. However, due to demands some production takes place abroad. Nevertheless the boots are still made of the same high quality Australian merino wool and to the same production methods as the tannery in Geelong used in the 1970’s.
